Coronavirus can cause complications even in young, healthy people. Patients with no previous hearing problems are beginning to seek medical advice for sudden deafness, tinnitus, ear inflammation or hearing loss. Karolina Kowalska interviewed Prof. Piotr H. Skarżyński for ‘Rzeczpospolita’ in the programme ‘Dr Internet i Pani Rozum’.
‘People treated for advanced coronavirus infection in April or May who received antimalarial drugs should have hearing checks every three to six months after the infection ends, to determine whether hearing loss results from treatment-related complications,’ said the guest. ‘Tinnitus very often starts after infections. It must not be ignored. Coronavirus is also such an infection. We need to establish whether hearing loss is present, whether it may progress and whether it will worsen hearing in future,’ says Prof. Skarżyński.
