‘Pulse oximeters have been used in medicine for a long time. In people infected with coronavirus, they help monitor whether the infection is worsening,’ said Prof. Piotr H. Skarżyński on TVP Info’s ‘Walka z koronawirusem’.
A pulse oximeter is an electronic device for measuring blood oxygen saturation. It can be used at home by placing it on a finger. Prof. Piotr H. Skarżyński explained its particular role during the COVID-19 pandemic.
‘The pulse oximeter has long been used in medicine. Its measurement tells us how well our blood is saturated with oxygen. It is one of the basic parameters monitored in patients undergoing surgery. During coronavirus infection, oxygen saturation may decrease. Normal values start at 95, with 98 being the optimum level. Values below 95 can still be acceptable in various diseases, but a value below 90 is very worrying. That is why it is worth having a pulse oximeter at home and measuring blood oxygen saturation: in a mild coronavirus infection, it lets us check whether the illness is worsening. If we notice deterioration, we can take further action,’ he explained.
He also said that although the device is simple to use, several factors need attention during measurement, including ambient temperature. Even painted nails, gel polish or artificial nails may prevent a reliable reading. Prof. Piotr H. Skarżyński encouraged younger people to help older adults use a pulse oximeter, as they may find it more difficult to operate.
