Prof. Piotr H. Skarżyński on the ‘Supertalenty w Medycynie 2020’ judging panel

Last year’s winner of ‘Supertalenty w Medycynie’, Prof. Piotr H. Skarżyński, has joined the judging panel of the prestigious competition organised by ‘Puls Medycyny’ since 2012. It aims to identify and reward leaders of the younger generation: doctors whose knowledge, skills and aptitude will help shape changes in healthcare in the coming years.

The panel has assessed the candidates, and results will be published on 16 June at pulsmedycyny.pl.

‘The distinction I received in last year’s “Supertalenty w Medycynie” competition, organised by “Puls Medycyny”, is extremely important to me. It recognised many years of work. Personally, I also saw it as confirmation of the right career choice and the culmination of efforts begun in early youth. Winning additionally motivated me to continue my scientific and teaching activities,’ says Prof. Piotr H. Skarżyński.

‘I am currently supervising my ninth doctoral project. Teaching also gives me the opportunity to build a team of colleagues working daily at more than a dozen centres in Poland and worldwide. I fully appreciate the importance of passing knowledge to young medical professionals and supporting their intellectual development. I inherited this approach to students from my father, Prof. Henryk Skarżyński, who himself encountered many wonderful teachers whose experience he could draw upon. I try to convey what matters to me in scientific and clinical life and prepare young doctors for situations they may encounter in practice. Our patients very often require interdisciplinary care, and that is what I want my students to notice. My message to this year’s winners is similar: as doctors and scientists, they should take a broad view of their work, considering the perspectives of colleagues from professions other than medicine,’ advises Prof. Skarżyński.

In Prof. Skarżyński’s view, the ‘Puls Medycyny’ competition gives young researchers a chance to make their mark in medicine.

‘Becoming known nationally is very important, of course, but the real test comes at international scientific society meetings. Presenting achievements in Poland can therefore be the first step towards cooperation with overseas centres,’ he observes.

He devoted much of the previous year to developing the World Hearing Forum established by the World Health Organization.

‘The organisation works, among other things, to implement prevention of hearing disorders. Another important recent area for me has been introducing a new type of implant for patients with external ear abnormalities. As for research, 18 publications I co-authored have been submitted for review in recent months,’ adds last year’s winner.
